JOHN ADAMS was baptised 25th June 1815 at Werrington, Devon, son of
Leonard Adams & Maria nee Squire.
The Baptism entry gives the father: 'husbandman of Yeolmbridge'.
The Ceremony performed by John Braddon, Minister.
1815-1837: Childhood;
Yeolmbridge was a small farming area adjacent Werrington Park.
His parents Leonard Adams & Amelia 'Maria' Squire were married at Werrington on the 27th March 1811.
John had several siblings; Mary Adams b.1812; Maria Adams b. 1819; Henry Hopper Adams b. 1821;
William Adams b. 1825; Thomasin Adams [aka Tamzin] born 1829.

His paternal grandparents
Roger Adams and Elizabeth [nee Hopper] lived at nearby North Petherwin.
His grandfather, died in 1806, nine years before his birth.
However John was aged eleven when his paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Adams [nee Hopper] was buried
at Petherwin Gate [Methodist] in 1821 at the age of seventy-seven.
John's maternal
Hopper Lineage extends so far to the early 17th Century with indications of earlier lineage.
John also had a paternal Uncle, John Adams who resided at nearby Ashwater by whom John had several

John also had a paternal Aunt, Elizabeth Gerry [nee Adams] who lived at adjacent Egloskerry.

1838 - Marriage;
At the age of twenty-two John Adams married Betsy Williams by Banns on the 1st April 1838 at Milton Abbott, Devon,
John was recorded as a labourer and Betsey as a Servant.
John signed his name on the document, Betsey with her mark.
Witnesses were John Polgreen and John Olver.
This information is consistent with the entry in the Bible of their son Henry Hopper Adams i.e.
'Betsey Adams' 'Married: 1st April 1838'.

A tenuous thread is the marriage of Thomas Williams married
Elizabeth Bray Tavistock 26th March 1800 which would give Thomas
the age of eighteen - considered not applicable.
There could have been other baptisms prior to 1813.
No Burials were recorded for any of Betsey's siblings at Tavistock.

John & Betsey settled at Betsey's native Tavistock, in all they had nine children;
Child 1: James Adams was born at Eastacott Devonshire, baptised on the 9th September 1839 at nearby Dunterton
near Tavistock. His father's occupation was recorded 'labourer'.

Child 2: Mary Adams in born in the December Qtr. 1841 registered at Tavistock.
This information is NOT consistent with the entry in the Bible of their son Henry Hopper Adams
i.e.' Mary Ann Sept. 17 1842.' Suggest that the year is incorrect in the Bible i.e. should be 1841
consistent with the Civil Registration Entry which falls in the correct Quarter.

Child 3: Henry Hopper Adams was born in the March Qtr. 1844 registered at Tavistock.
[FREE BDM ONLINE = Henry – opper Adams]. Later documents record his middle name 'Hopper'.
Henry is the namesake of his paternal great great grandfather Henry Hopper [born 1708] the father of his
great grandmother Elizabeth Adams nee Hopper [1744-1821].
This information is consistent with the entry in the Bible of their son Henry Hopper Adams
i.e. Henry Hopper Dec 30 1843. Born the day before New Year's Eve, his parents registered him the
following Quarter. This was common. The date of Registration was not always necessarily the Quarter

James Adams, now aged eleven, was found recorded a mile away working on a nearby farm,
[about ½ an hour's walk from his parents & siblings], the property 'Hollerex' of 220 acres was
owned by Philip Spears who lived there with his wife and young family, employing five
agricultural labourers, 1 boy (James Adams) and plus others.

1841 Census: John's mother had moved to the Hamlet of St. Thomas, Dunhead, Cornwall.
Maria Adams, Head, Widow, age 65, Widow, born Cornwall, Marhamchurch,

1851 - Preparations to Immigrate;
The decision to immigrate to Australia was made possibly a few months before William’s birth as the
necessary papers and submissions had to be arranged and approved.
John's widowed mother Maria also made the voyage but the decision was made for her to accompany
John's brother-in-law Thomas Matters spouse of his Mary, who with Mary and his children had also
arranged to embark to Australia at this time.

This is consistent with the entry in the Bible of their son Henry Hopper Adams [i.e. Registered the following quarter]
i.e. William April 30 1852.
1852 Departure from the Motherland & Arrival at Port Adelaide, Australia;
They left England via Portsmouth [2 miles of Tavistock] per the Barque 'China' on the 26th July 1852,
arriving at Port Adelaide, South Australia on Friday 12th November 1852.

The Voyage took four months.
John's mother with his two sisters, Thomasine & Mary Matters with his brother-in-law Thomas Matters and
their children left the motherland two weeks later at Portsmouth on the on the 12 August 1852 arriving at
Port Adelaide on the 10th December 1852.
Both John and Thomas Matters settled at Adelaide where it is implied by the names in subsequent generations
that they remained close. His mother remained living with her daughter Mary Matters and her family.
His sister Thomasine married James Rowe 29th July 1858 at the Wesleyan Chapel Adelaide, by whom she
had issue.

1862-1869:Eldest son James, now a Miner, had left Adelaide for the Victorian Gold Fields, settling for a time at
Pleasant Creek where he married Charlotte Maria Hamilton on the 22nd Nov. 1869 by whom he had issue.

1870: Son Henry Hopper Adams married Mary Jane Tippet at Adelaide on the 10th May 1870 by whom he had issue.

1872: Bestsey Adams [nee Williams] died 28th July 1872.

Details in Civil Registration for South Australia is as follows;
Elizabeth Adams died 28th July 1872, age 59 years, married, John Adams [H = Husband],
Residence: nr Mount Barker, Place of Death: nr Mount Barker.
Betsey was survived by her husband John of thirty-four years marriage and her surviving children;
James aged 33yrs [married]; Henry aged 28yrs [married]; Tamzin aged 25yrs [unmarried];
Possibly Maria aged 22yrs [status unknown]; William aged 20yrs; Hannah aged 18yrs;
Possibly John aged 18yrs and several grandchildren.
1873: Daughter Tamzin married thirty-one year old widower John Teakle at Adelaide on the
19th November 1873, by whom she had issue. [See Epilogue]
1873: Death of John's mother;
During this time John's mother had been living with his widowed sister Mary Matters and her children.
Maria Matters [nee Squires] died on the 23rd February 1873 recorded aged eighty-eight[Reg. Bowden S.A.]
1875: John remarried;
John Adams married Caroline Jury [nee Waypool] at the Registry Office, Adelaide on the 27th February 1875.
Noted was: John Adams, widower, age 58yrs - Father's name Leonard Adams.
Caroline Jury, widow, age 42yrs - Father's name Joseph Waypool.
c.1890: By this time John was aged seventy-four when with his 2nd wife Caroline, he visited his eldest son
James and his wife Charlotte at Sandhurst, Victoria, near the Goldfields at Bendigo in 1890.
During this visit the family attended the Rational Dress Picnic on the Road to Fernshaw, Victoria.
A Photo was taken on-route to dated c.1890 and treasured by the Adams Family for over a Century.
They possibly include some of the Matters Family [John's nieces & nephews], who revered John
and a few of their children's names hint at a strong relationship between John's son eldest son
James and his wife Charlotte Hamilton, their 1st cousin.
Any help identifying individuals in this photo would be greatly appreciated.

John returned to Adelaide, South Australia shortly following the event, however their youngest son
William Thomas Adams remained with his brother at Sandhurst where established himself as an Auctioneer
[Real Estate].
1895: Their eldest son James Adams was still resident at Sandhurst with his wife Charlotte and their young family,
when on the 18th February 1895 at the age of fifty-six James was killed in a Mining Accident at a remote
diggings at nearby Mopoke Gully where he was working that day with his son young James Adams jnr. aged
twenty one. James died soon after he was brought to the surface of the verticle shaft.

1895: John Adams died ten months later in Adelaide on the 6th December 1895 at the recorded age of 79years [i.e. born 1816].
He was survived by his 2nd wife Caroline of twenty years marriage, his five surviving children and many
grandchildren [see Epilogue below].
Epilogue
Caroline Adams [nee Weypool] [c.1831-1915] 2nd wife and widow of John Adams
Caroline survived John by a further twenty years and died at Stephany, South Australia on the
13th October 1915 at the recorded age of eighty-four.
James Adams [1839-1895] eldest son of son of John Adams and Betsey [nee Williams];
James married Charlotte Maria Hamilton at Pleasant Creek, Victoria in 1869.
They settled in Castlemaine in Victoria where James worked as a Miner.
James was killed in a mining accident in 1895.

Norman Stanley Adams [1883-1953]: Salvation Army Officer. Norman married firstly Charlotte Marie Gartner in
New Zealand in 1910. They had issue.
He later married Ruby Heidorn, there was no issue of this union.
Ruby Septima Adams [1885-1967]: Ruby Adams married Benjamin James Thomas [a widower] on the 19th April 1922
by whom she had one daughter.
Mary Adams [1841-?]: eldest daughter of John Adams and Betsey [nee Williams];
Mary Adams is believed to have married Friedrich William August KLEEMAN 19 August 1869.
Family Legend tells that Mary died within a year of her marriage. Friedrich remarried.
Henry Hopper Adams [1844-1915]: son of John Adams and Betsey [nee Williams];
Henry Hopper Adams married Mary Jane Tippett at the Wesleyan Chapel at Mt. Barker South Australia
on the 10th May 1870.
Notes: Groom: age 25yrs - Father: John.
Bride: age 24yrs - Father: George
Jane Tippett: According to the Family Bible entry Mary Jane arrived in Australia in
1860, although no record of her immigration has been found to date.

Obituary: 20th February 1915;
' Henry Hopper Adams of Holden St. North Fitzroy, Gentleman, who died on
January 8, 1915 left under a Will dated October 23 last, left Real Estate
valued at £625 and Personal Property valued at £3,024 to his children'.
THE TIPPETT FAMILY OF ST. EVIN, CORNWALL

Although there is a discrepancy of one year between Mary Jane's age at marriage
and the Family Bible entry.
She was likely born 28th April 1844 [Bible entry '1845'].
The daughter of George Tippett his wife Jane nee Snell of St. Ervin, Cornwall,
a baptism appears in this parish for Mary Jane Tippett on the 19th May 1844
of the same parents, consistent with the earlier entry.
Note: The Bible entry also indicates she died 1st August 1890 at the age of 45yrs [b.1845!!!]
George Tippett was baptised 17th Sept. 1820 at St. Ervin, Cornwall, the son of
Thomas Tippett and his wife Mary nee Brenton. Died 30th December 1897,
Adelaide, South Australia.

Tamzin Adams [aka Thomasin Adams] [1847-1926]: daughter of John Adams and Betsey [nee Williams];
At the age of twenty-six Tamzin Adams [aka Thirzia] married thirty-one year old widower John Teakle,
the son of Alexander Teakle. They were married on the 19th November 1873 at the residence
of Joseph Spittle, Kent Town, Adelaide. John and Thirzia remained in South Australia.
Tamzin Teakle nee Adams was buried in 1926 in S.A. at the age of seventy-nine.

Maria Adams [1850-?] – daughter of John and Betsey:
No satisfactory information has been found for Maria.
William Thomas Adams – son of John and Betsey: Born 1852;
Entries for marriages and issue were too tenuous to consider.
Around 1895 William was found at Lyttleton Street Castlemaine Victoria living near or
with his elder brother James and his family.
He placed an advertisement in the Mount Alexander Mail on the 22nd February 1895 as a Hotel Broker,
Auctioneer/Valuer.
Two days later his brother James' died in a mining accident.
William appears to have been sharing the house with his brother and his family and may have
been a support for his sister-in-law Charlotte after his brother's death.
